Buy wines from South Tyrol

South Tyrol is one of the most exciting and dynamic wine-growing regions in Italy and also the home of Mrs Munzert, so it's practically part of our DNA. Characterised by the Alps in the north but also the gateway to the Mediterranean south, the region is home to autochthonous vines such as Lagrein and Vernatsch there are also many international grape varieties. Although the region is comparatively small, the areas from the Isarco Valley in the north to the lowlands in the south are completely different in terms of geology and climate and therefore offer ideal growing conditions for each variety.

As a South Tyrol specialist since 1975, we stock a large number of small, independent winegrowers and wineries in addition to the well-known large winery co-operatives. Discover our top wineries - buy wine from South Tyrol:

South Tyrol's wine regions

The small wine-growing region of South Tyrol (just 5700 hectares!) is further divided into these seven sub-regions:

Valle Isarco/Eisacktal - at the very top in the north-east around Bressanone/Brixen, somewhat cooler overall and therefore ideal for crisp, elegant white wines

Bolzano - the economic centre of the region, famous for its hot porphyry soils on which the best Lagreins thrive, such as the legendary Taber

Überetsch - the wine stronghold between Eppan and Kaltern, where some of the best Vernatsch wines are grown

Unterland - the largest and most southerly area in South Tyrol in terms of surface area and correspondingly diverse: from the warmest locations in the valley to extremely high locations at 1000 metres, top wines grow here, whether white (e.g. Tiefenbrunner's Müller-Thurgau Feldmarschall Fenner) or the red Bordeaux varieties Cabernet and Merlot

Adige Valley - the Adige river valley to the west of Bolzano is particularly famous for its castles and co-operatives: the Nals-Margreid winery is also based here

Merano - the beautiful spa town in a charming location also has many smaller wineries, such as Riedinger Hof

Vinschgau - the north-westernmost region is windy and dry and equally famous for its apples and apricots

With 5,500 hectares, Alto Adige is one of the smallest of Italy's 20 wine-growing regions. However, 98% of the vineyards are DOC certified!

The autonomous province, which belonged to the Austro-Hungarian monarchy until the First World War, is further divided into seven wine regions:

Eisacktal - Bozen - Etschtal - Meran - Vinschgau - Überetsch - Unterland

With over 150 South Tyrolean wines, it is of course difficult to choose the three top wines, but we have agreed on these wines as a team for the time being:

- Sonntaler Vernatsch

- Lagrein Taber

- Pinot Blanc Sirmian
