Lagrein is the second autochthonous red wine variety in South Tyrol and Trentino alongside Vernatsch. Blessed with lush fruit, flavour, velvety fullness and good acidity, Lagrein can mature for many years. The grape probably originated in the Lagarina Valley in Trentino and was first mentioned in documents in the 17th century in the Muri monastery in the Gries district of Bolzano, where some of the best sites for it are still found today. On the porphyry and sandy soils and in the hot climate of Bolzano (in summer the thermometer can easily climb to 40°), but cooled by the cool night winds from the Sarntal valley, Lagrein finds the ideal conditions for perfect ripeness.
Ampelographers have now been able to prove that Lagrein is related to Syrah. No wonder the vine from the Rhône feels so at home in Italy's second hottest city!
The benchmark for the best Lagrein is Taber from the Bolzano winery, which has been winning awards for years - a wine for special moments. Allow it to mature in peace, open or decant the bottle some time in advance and then savour the luscious fruity notes, the velvety richness and the bouquet reminiscent of violets and roses.
Lagrein goes particularly well with braised dishes and roast game.
