Buy wine from Piedmont

In the world of wine, there are the 4 famous Bs: in addition to Bordeaux and Burgundy, in Italy these are Brunello and Barolo. The home of the latter is the municipality of the same name in Piedmont and the surrounding area. It is made 100% from the Nebbiolo Grape, a variety rich in acidity and tannins, which only reaches its peak after a long period of ageing. The municipality of Barbaresco also produces similarly great wines. However, as the climate here is somewhat milder and the grapes ripen earlier, it is ready to drink somewhat earlier and cannot be stored for quite as long. Piedmont in figures:

44.000 ha of vineyards

By the way, there are no IGT wines here, the whole region is classified as DOC and DOCG!

Fun fact: did you know that Barolo was always sweet in the 19th century? As Nebbiolo ripens late, it was often too cold in the cellar during fermentation and the yeasts were not sufficient to ferment the wine completely. Modern cellar technology has fundamentally changed this and today Barolo is one of the driest red wines.
