Castello di Fonterutoli - Mazzei

"The temple of Sangiovese" - this is what the family calls their winery. The winery was actually designed by a family member - Agnes Mazzei - and combines functionality with modern aesthetics while minimising the impact on nature. The must is moved downwards using only gravity, first into specially designed stainless steel tanks, where even the smallest parcels are vinified separately, thus preserving biodiversity, and then down into the stone cellar, which is cooled by natural springs and holds 3,000 barriques.

The estate has over 650 hectares in total, of which "only" 110 hectares are vineyards, which alone are characterised by seven different terroirs in three municipalities: Radda, Castellina and Castelnuovo di Beradegna. One of the Gran Selezione wines comes from each of them. In addition, the family was one of the "revolutionaries" in the 1980s who caused a sensation with international grape varieties and characterised the boom in Super Tuscans. These include the Concerto, which contains Cabernet Sauvignon as well as Sangiovese, and the legendary Siepi, which contains 50% Merlot as well as Sangiovese.

As befits noble families who have been growing wine since 1435, there were of course also notable ancestors: on 16 December 1398, Ser Lapo named Chianti wine for the first time in an official document and Philipp Mazzei, friend of the American President Jefferson, was a pioneer of viticulture in Virginia.
