Mazzei, Tuscany

The Marchesi Mazzei family has owned the land around Fonterutoli for centuries. The 110 hectares of vineyards are nestled in a beautiful natural landscape in the Chianti Classico region. The stony soil is characterised by limestone and sandstone from ancient sedimentary layers. All the wines from the 114 plots are harvested by hand and pressed separately. Here is a brief overview of the different wines:

Tuscany, Chianti

The classic:

Chianti Classico DOCG from 7 different parcels around Fonterutoli from the classic grape varieties Sangiovese, Malvasia Nera and Colorino

The Riserva:

Chianti Classico Riserva "Ser Lapo" from the single vineyards Cornia and Caggiolo, here Sangiovese is complemented by Merlot

Gran Selezione:

Mazzei also produces 3 Cru, i.e. single-vineyard wines. The Castello GS Fonterutoli comes from the best plots in the municipality of Castellina, while the Vicoreggio 36 GS comes from the municipality of Castelnuovo di Berardegna. Both are pure Sangiovese from the best clonal selections.

The "Supertuscan" for every day

With a Merlot content of 30%, the Poggio Badiola can only call itself IGT - just like its great role models. An all-rounder for many occasions

A true Supertuscan

The Concerto di Fonterutoli has been at the forefront of the Tuscan revolution since its introduction in 1981. In addition to Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet refines this special wine

Cabernet in its purest form

The Philip goes its own way: it consists of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the heart of both Chianti Classico and Maremma

In a class of its own: the Siepi

Gambero Rosso honours Siepi as "one of the 50 wines that changed the Italian wine style forever". Siepi is the name of a single vineyard in Castellina where the Mazzei family planted Merlot back in the early 1980s and recognised this international grape variety as the ideal complement to the noble Sangiovese. A sacrilege at the time and the downgrading to "table wine", but it helped to start a revolution and led to international success that continues to this day. Not for nothing was the 21er awarded 98 points by James Suckling...
