Description

Siepi Toscana IGT

Origin: Italy, Tuscany, Castellina in Chianti, vineyard "Siepi" at 260 metres above sea level

Winemaker: Castello di Fonterutoli, Mazzei

Grape variety: 50% Sangiovese, 50% Merlot - hand-picked from 10 September (Merlot), from 24 September (Sangiovese) | 23 - 36 year old vines

Soil: Sandy limestone ("Alberese")

Ageing: 18 months in small French oak barrels (70% new): Merlot in 225 litre barriques / Sangiovese in 500 litre tonneaux | Finissage for 3 months in cement tanks

A single vineyard since 1435 with a special microclimate: a wine that is perfectly balanced between elegance, power and complexity.

Rich notes of elderberry, dark plums, blackberries, sandalwood and tobacco

Alcohol content: 14.5% vol.

Info: The "Siepi" vineyard has been owned by the Mazzei family since 1435 and has always been a model farm, which is still managed with the same respect today. A unique location, a special microclimate and the foresight at the beginning of the 1980s to plant Merlot as the ideal complement to Sangiovese in a very special "terroir" give rise to a wine that is perfectly balanced between elegance, power and complexity.

Content: 750ml

About the 2021 vintage:

The year 2021 was characterised by a cold winter with little precipitation. An (initially) cool spring with sufficient rainfall was followed by a long, hot summer with good daily temperature fluctuations, which allowed for an excellent completion of the grape ripening process. It is worth noting that the vines were initially delayed in their development, which improved as the season progressed.

The harvest was extremely rewarding in terms of performance and the excellent quality and health of the grapes entering the cellar; these grapes produce rich, well-structured wines thanks to their thick but balanced, fresh skins. Due to the lack of rainfall in winter, which hindered budding in the early-ripening areas, there was a slight drop in volume.
