Origin: Italy, South Tyrol, south-east facing vineyard from the St. Josef vineyard on the north shore of Lake Kaltern at an altitude of around 280-300 metres above sea level.

Grape variety: 100% Vernatsch, dry, 60-70 year old vines, yield 60 hl/ha

Soil: The high coarse fraction of this deep, sandy-loamy soil type with a light porphyry content and good drainage provides ideal conditions for the vines

2016vintage:

The 2016 vintage was full of surprises. The mild spring was replaced by an icy April, which initially brought growth to a standstill. Diligent and consistent work in the vineyard made it possible to keep the situation under control. An unstable start to the summer was followed by sunny days at the end of August and again in September. The grape harvest did not begin until mid-September. The white wines are characterised by a pleasant aroma, supported by a well-structured acidity, while the red wines impress with their strong aromas and matching acidity.

Vinification: 15-day maceration at 25°C in large wooden barrels (3,000 litres) with malolactic fermentation; 8-month ageing on the fine lees in large wooden barrels; minimal use of sulphur and only a single filtration immediately before bottling in June 2017.

Tasting notes:

- Bright ruby red colour

- A combination of freshness, elegance and saltiness blends harmoniously with notes of crisp red fruits such as cherry and blackcurrant; nuances of hazelnut, almond and light roasted flavours round off the fascinating bouquet.

- Full, spicy and savoury on the palate - accompanied by velvety tannins that give the wine good length. Its drinkability always makes you look forward to the next sip - a classic Kalterersee.

This wine impressively demonstrates that Lake Caldaro is not limited to traditional South Tyrolean dishes. Let your senses guide you and try it in unusual combinations, for example with raw fish or seafood. You will be amazed.
