Buy Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
The third of the three major DOCGs in Tuscany alongside Chianti and Brunello. Always a little in the shadow of the two even more famous appellations, almost like the easily overlooked middle child of three siblings. But perhaps that is precisely its advantage: never extreme but surprisingly exciting! Made from up to 100% Sangiovese (here the Prugnolo gentile clone) or with a proportion of up to 20% of other grape varieties such as Canaiolo or even white grapes (although this is hardly ever practised any more). Generally speaking, the Nobile has slightly softer tannins (than Brunello) but also slightly less acidity (than Chianti) - less extreme, but well-balanced and therefore so interesting! If it also comes from an exceptional winery like Salcheto the pleasure is hard to beat!
Incidentally, this wine has nothing to do with the Montepulciano d'Abbruzzo grape variety...
