Sicily is Italy's largest island and lies to the west of the tip of the boot with the region of Calabria.
The Greeks brought their wine-growing tradition with them as early as the 8th century BC and turned the cities of Syracuse and Taormina into flourishing wine trading centres.

Sicily wine region
With around 96,000 hectares, Sicily is not only the largest wine-growing region in Italy - it is also larger than the entire German wine-growing region.
The climate is Mediterranean, hot and dry, but the large day/night temperature differences allow the flavours to develop particularly well and the acidity to be retained.
The most important indigenous white grape varieties are Cataratto, Grillo and Insolia as well as Zibibbo, which is called Muscat d'Alexandria here. The most important red varieties are Nero d'Avola (Calabrese) and Perricone.
