Müller-Thurgau, or Rivaner as the vine is also known, is a cross between Riesling and Madeleine Royale (which is mainly grown as a table grape). It is named after the Swiss Hermann Müller-Thurgau, who bred it in Geisenheim. It is considered the most successful new white wine variety!

As it produces quite high yields, it was often used for mass-produced wines of inferior quality - hence its often poor reputation. However, when yields are reduced and the grapes are optimised, fine, wonderfully aromatic wines with hints of white flowers, herbs, white fruit and stone fruit are produced. The crème de la crème is the "Feldmarschall von Fenner" from the Tiefenbrunner winery, which grows at an altitude of over 1000 metres in the municipality of Margreid, South Tyrol.
