Gaglioppo

While it was previously assumed that the red grape originated in Greece, it is now considered certain that it is a natural cross between Sangiovese x Mantonico bianco. Thanks to an order placed by the Hohenstaufen Emperor Frederick II in 1240 for 100 barrels of Gaglioppo from Naples, there is evidence that this grape has long been native to southern Italy.

It thrives best in a hot climate and does not mind drought, which is why it is mainly cultivated in Calabria, particularly in the Cirò region on the Ionian Sea. Thanks to the high natural sugar content of the grapes, it produces rather strong, heavy, sometimes high-alcohol wines. Flavours of dark berries, cherries and spices, underpinned by balsamic notes, make the wines ideal with grilled or braised dishes.
