Friulian wine
The Friuli region in the far north-east of Italy has always been a border region with changing rule: Rome and Byzantium, Venice and the Habsburg Empire have all left their mark. The name Friuli goes back to the founding of the city of Forum Iulii (now Cividale) by Julius Caesar. So wine has been made here for a long time. Whereas in the 1960s the emphasis was on inexpensive red wines, the region has developed into a high-quality white wine region in just one generation. Today, great importance is once again attached to the treasure trove of indigenous vines such as Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Refosco or Schioppetino.
