the area under Vernatsch is 573 hectares, which corresponds to 10.2% of the total area under cultivation in South Tyrol. It is a red, autochthonous grape variety that has been widely cultivated since the 16th century. The most important red wine variety in South Tyrol presents itself as a light, drinkable wine and is an excellent match for South Tyrolean Alpine cuisine. The varieties are nevertheless different: full-bodied as St. Magdalener, soft as Kalterersee, spicy as Meraner.
