Welschriesling is a white wine variety that thrives particularly well in low rainfall and produces high yields. Contrary to what is assumed, the vine is NOT related to Riesling; this variety probably originates from Italy. Welchriesling is the second most important variety in Austria after Grüner Veltliner, accounting for around 11% of the vineyard area. From dry wines to sweet wines and sophisticated sparkling wines, it is mainly produced in Lower Austria, Burgenland and Styria.
