A young winemaker's daughter and artist in eastern Burgenland and a young brewer from western Vorarlberg. The result? A power couple who don't rush into anything, but instead go their own way with determination and deliberation. They made a conscious decision to keep their parents' small farm small. Whether it's pruning the vines outside or hours of bâtonnage during fermentation and skimming off the wine by hand so that no filter destroys the flavour. While the vineyards are located in Halbthurn, the cellar facilities are in Deutsch-Jahrndorf, about 20 kilometres away. This means that the whole family has to get up very early for the harvest so that the delicate grapes arrive in the cellar as early as possible and still cool. Why the balancing act? What does Pet Nat mean?

The abbreviation stands for Pétillant Naturell. It refers to a process in which the natural fermentation of must into wine takes place largely in the bottle, so that the resulting carbon dioxide does not escape but remains bound in the wine. These wines are therefore naturally sparkling, usually dry and often not filtered, but cloudy with yeast. With Roth's Pet Nat Rouge from Zweigelt is - according to the winemakers - an "archaic" pleasure - effervescent and impetuous, full of flavour, not "for sensitive souls". During our tasting, we were able to convince ourselves of the opposite - the dark red pearls delighted everyone with their surprising, strong, yeasty and fruity character.
