Wines Ciro Calabria Ippolito

Ippolito 1845 - Cirò

Calabria, in the very south of Italy - at the bottom of the boot, so to speak - miraculously produces fresh white wines, elegant rosés and slender, polished red wines despite the hot climate. But perhaps it is also down to the work of the Ippolitos - two brothers and their cousin - who are now the fifth generation to cultivate the 100 hectares, 65% of which they do themselves and 35% in close co-operation with small local winegrowers who are proud to work together. A conscious decision was made to cultivate indigenous grape varieties, especially Gaglioppo for the red wines and Greco bianco and Pecorello for the whites.

The "little sheep", which means Pecorello, is an old variety native to Calabria that was originally no longer cultivated in Ciro Marina, but finds wonderful conditions here. The white grapes grow on sandy-loamy soils right next to the sea, blown by the Tramonte north wind, which ensures good aeration. The red grapes, on the other hand, grow on the hills (Colli) of Ciro at an altitude of around 350 metres. We always like the Pescanera from the Greco nera grape - a great rosé that combines flavour, fullness and elegance wonderfully.

The vineyards for white wines such as Mare Chiaro and Pecorello grow right next to the azure blue sea. A sight that delights the soul just as much as the palate when savouring the fine wines. We like!
