Carl Loewen at Vinothek Munzert

Carl Loewen - Moselle

The Romans brought viticulture to the Moselle. None other than Julius Caeser's wife Livia gave her name to the village of Leiwen, as she had a villa built right here. Excavations prove this to this day. Even more important for us wine enthusiasts, however, are the decisions made by the Loewens in the 19th century: after secularisation, an ancestor of the family bought the top vineyard Maximin Klosterlay, the foundation of the estate. Further sites were to follow: the Thörnicher Ritsch, the Laurentiuslay and the Maximin Herrenberg with vines dating back to 1896.

The picture on the left shows the Moselle vineyard map from 1868, with the various sites of the Carl Loewen estate marked with arrows.

Maximin Herrenberg - a south-facing site with rare red slate and probably the oldest preserved Riesling vineyard in the world

MaximinKlosterlay - the Moselle valley, open to the west, allows the sun to hit the vineyard unhindered, blue slate ensures enormous length and fullness of flavour

Thönicher Ritsch - the name is derived from the crumbly grey slate that keeps slipping away, an absolute steep slope. Wine with enormous fruit flavours and mineral structure

Laurentiuslay - as land reorganisation was too expensive here, the vineyard remained undamaged. As a result, the water flow in the blue slate has been preserved so that there is sufficient moisture even in midsummer.
