The winery was founded in 1861 and is now run by the 7th generation. The grandmother used to run a guesthouse, which was expanded each time one of the eight children moved out. The wine for the guests was supplied by the winery. Father Klaus had bigger things in mind: producing his own bottled wine from reduced-yield grapes. In 1978, aged just 18, he bottled his first wine. And just a short time later, in 1984, he planted the small Langefeld vineyard (just 4000 square metres!) with Burgundy clones. His sons Hannes and Daniel are now taking this treasure into the future for the first time with the 2019 vintage: Vigna Das Langefeld.
What does sustainability in viticulture mean for the Pfitscher family?
In 2011, they were the first winery in Italy to win the first prize for sustainability. They have to fulfil 42 criteria, from CO2 reduction to light bottles and work in the vineyard.
The pomace is turned into compost and reused as fertiliser in the vineyard, and the vineyards are planted with flowers and grasses after the harvest. This keeps the soil alive and attracts beneficial insects. And the entire building, including the winery, showroom (which is breathtakingly beautiful - both inside and out!) and living quarters, is also part of the bigger picture as KlimaHaus Wine.

Vigna Das Langefeld
What is so special about this Pinot Noir?
The vines, which are now almost 40 years old, grow at an altitude of around 550 metres in deep clay-limestone soils with an extremely high planting density. Like all of the Pfitscher family's vineyards, this parcel is also organically farmed. The grapes ripen extra long and are carefully selected and harvested by hand. Cold maceration then takes place in the cellar for two days, followed by spontaneous fermentation for around 14 days. The wine then matures for a year in barriques and large oak barrels before being bottled unfiltered and unfined and allowed to mature for a further two and a half years.
